钝猛蚁亚科首先被Ward (1994)从猛蚁亚科中提升为一族，2003年Bolton将钝猛蚁亚科正式提升为亚科，并将钝猛蚁属Adetomyrma归入该亚科。Saux et al. (2004)利用28S rDNA的证据将Apomyrma属也划归为该亚科。
分类特征为：
Dentiform setae present on clypeus (all known taxa except Apomyrma, Amblyopone mutica, and similar species), labrum (Apomyrma), or both (a few Amblyopone species).
Petiole broadly attached to abdominal segment III, without a distinctly descending posterior face (present in Apomyrma). |
