工蚁小型至中型，为一小属，分布于埃塞俄比亚、印度到马来西亚和巴布亚等地区，土中营巢。
工蚁单型，通常褐色到黑色；触角7节；上颚大，亚三角形；并胸腹节具一对长刺，尖；第一结节前具一长柄，易于辨认。
注：《中国蚂蚁》（Wu et Wang,1995）中记载建属时间为1841年。
